Nature Reserve Pian di Spagna
Since 1971, after Ramsar Convention signed in Teheran, the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve is an area of international environmental importance and its value reinforced at European level through the recognition of the area as “Special Protection Area” (SPA) and “Site of Community Importance” (SCI). It is also the crossroads of major migration routes and ,during overwintering, it hosts several species of native wetlands birds, that can be observed from the bird watching stations, such as ponds and many natural pools all along the property. Cascina Borgofrancone offers also a room for conference, seminars and photography workshops in collaboration with Ardea Photo.
Nature Reserve – The Wildlife
Nature Reserve of Pian di Spagna and Novate Mezzola hosts numerous species of birds including herons, mallards, cranes, grebes, eaglets and swans. The Reserve provide also habitat for a precious wildlife of both small and medium-sized mammals such as foxes, deer, boars, badgers, squirrels, hares and large-sized farm mammals as horses, bovine and donkeys. Near the watercourses live also different species of amphibians.
Nature Reserve – Indoor and Outdoor activities
While staying at Cascina Borgofrancone guests can enjoy Wellness Centre, fleet of bicycles, tennis court italian pool table, a winter garden with library ,several pic-nic and relaxing areas. Just outside the main structure, people can make jogging, long walking along the lake, riding horses and discovering the wildlife thanks to the different bird watching stations. Cascina Borgofrancone is located in the northernmost tip of the lake Como, very close to Valtellina, Valchiavenna. This good position allows to practise both water (kitesurf, windsurf, canoa..) and mountain sports ( trekking, hiking, skiing..). The surrounding territory is rich in natural, historic and cultural heritage. There are different historic sites and medieval villages. Bellagio, Varenna, Bellano,Gravedona, Chiavenna and Morbegno among the most famous.
